Executive Summary

This microlearning project was developed to support mid-level HR managers at a UK-based printing firm in managing workplace conflict more effectively. Existing training had proven ineffective in addressing the generational and cultural diversity of the workforce. Over a two-year period, the company experienced a rising trend in employee complaints and grievances, contributing to lower retention rates, particularly among new hires. The new training aimed to offer a more practical, accessible resource that could help managers handle conflict sensitively and with greater awareness of different communication styles.

Challenge

The previous training lacked practical guidance on addressing conflicts that stem from differences in personality types and communication styles. Although mid-level managers had received some prior conflict resolution training, they struggled to apply it effectively due to limited understanding of how personality traits influence communication. As a result, attempts to manage interpersonal tensions were inconsistent and, in some cases, escalated rather than resolved conflict.

Solution

We chose a microlearning format to provide quick, on-demand access to relevant strategies and tools. This format allowed managers to reference key concepts in real time, without disrupting their workflow. The course included links to DiSC assessment materials that managers could use to better understand employee communication preferences and model more effective interactions across their teams. Visual assets were created using Canva and AI-generated images, designed to be both professional and easy to digest. Content was structured for quick scanning and memorability, with a focus on real-world relevance.

To support data tracking and follow-up, a short survey was embedded at the end of the training using xAPI, with Zapier workflows enabling automated response collection and future feedback triggers.

Results

While formal outcome data is not yet available, early feedback from pilot users indicated that the microlearning format was both accessible and immediately applicable. Managers reported that the content helped them better understand the root causes of interpersonal tension and gave them clear starting points for addressing communication issues. The integration of DiSC tools has sparked interest in broader personality-based approaches to team management. Success will be measured through follow-up surveys, course completion tracking via xAPI, and changes in internal grievance reporting trends over the next performance cycle. This project reinforced the value of lightweight, performance-support tools that meet learners at the point of need, particularly in time-sensitive, emotionally charged workplace situations.
